An Insider’s View of the Open-Air Cinema at Christmas Island

Glad you are here! If this is your first visit, you might want to subscribe to the Outdoor Movie Feed or email updates to make sure you don't miss a thing on the Open Air Cinema blog!

Outdoor Movies at the Open-Air Cinema at Christmas IslandAfter retracing my steps I headed down the third and final track – as it turned out, saving the best for last. I wound my way through an enchanted forest of giant Tahitian chestnuts, eventually fetching up at a spring, where fresh water bubbled from a limestone cave before cascading over a rock ledge inlaid with an intricate pattern of moss. Some of the island’s Chinese population believe this waterfall to be the centre of the Earth’s water universe. While I’m no expert on Feng Shui, it’s definitely one of the prettiest waterfalls I’d set eyes upon. I felt as though I could linger there all evening, but it was a Saturday – which meant it was time for the most popular community event on the island: the weekly outdoor movie.

This was far from your standard night out at the movies. This was cinema Christmas Island-style. Armed with an esky of cool drinks, a stash of snacks and a comfy cushion, I paid my five dollars and took a seat amongst the expectant throng of locals. The night’s offering was Pirates Of The Caribbean – a fitting choice for a far-flung, open-air cinema perched on a cliff-top with never-ending views over a moonlit ocean. Midway through the first pillaging scene, beyond the screen and makeshift sound system, bolts of lightning punctuated an otherwise darkened horizon. A light sea breeze touched our faces while a flock of birds returned late to their roosts, squawking loudly overhead. For a moment I thought I actually was in the Caribbean.

As the credits from the outdoor movie rolled, many of the locals gathered in groups to polish off the contents of their eskies and catch up on the week’s gossip. Exhausted from my day of exploring, I drove carefully back down the winding road from to open-air cinema to my accommodation, half expecting some sword-bearing bandit to leap out at me. Thankfully – sort of – all I encountered was more crabs.

From Australia to Christmas Island to Hawaii, Princess Cruise Line Makes Outdoor Movies a Romantic Event

Outdoor Movies on Christmas Island on Princess Cruise LineWhere else should suitors turn for help in creating a “stellar” marriage proposal than Princess Cruises, famous as the romantic setting of “The Love Boat” television series? Whether in the Bahamas, Mexico, or Christmas Island, outdoor movies will become the engagement event everyone will be talking about. Beginning in June 2006, with the launch of the line’s newest ship, Crown Princess, a new “Engagement Under the Stars” package will offer the opportunity for a couple to enjoy movie-star status when they agree to tie the knot. Men can pop the question to their unsuspecting betrothed with a personal video proposal shown on the ship’s giant outdoor Movies Under the Stars movie screen and, after she says “yes,” Princess will continue to keep the stars in their eyes throughout the sailing with a special romantic dinner, amenities, and the creation of keepsake items to remember the occasion long after they return home.

“Engagement Under the Stars” proposals will take place just prior to one of the evening’s outdoor movies at a time prearranged with the proposer, who will bring his unsuspecting fiancé-to-be to the scene under the guise of seeing the evening’s show. Priced at $695, the package includes:

– A secret session for the proposer with the ship’s videographer to create a personalized on-screen proposal

– Two glasses of champagne and a red rose presented to the couple immediately following the proposal

– A bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in the couple’s stateroom the evening of the proposal

– An engagement portrait session with 8×10 engagement photo

– Four candid 8×6 photos of the surprise proposal

– A Princess Cruises romantic, in-room breakfast

– A dinner for two at one of the ship’s sophisticated alternative dining

venues, such as Sabatini’s Trattoria or Crown Grill

– A couple’s massage in the Lotus Spa

– A complimentary pottery class offered through the ship’s signature

learning program, ScholarShip@Sea, at which the couple will design a

commemorative “engagement plate” souvenir

– A 10 percent discount off of fine jewelry in the shipboard boutiques,

just in case the groom didn’t bring a ring

– A $100 credit towards a wedding-at-sea package on a future voyage

The “Engagement Under the Stars” package enables any “Regular Joe” to provide his bride-to-be with a highly romantic and attention-getting proposal … without him having to do any of the planning. “All the gentleman has to bring is the ring and the question,” says Jan Swartz, Princess’ senior vice president of customer service and sales. “We’ve tapped into many of the ship’s fabulous amenities—from dining, to spa, to our ScholarShip@Sea program, and of course, our signature Movies Under the Stars screen for outdoor movies—to combine the most romantic and memorable experiences for newly engaged couples, and we’re very happy to offer this package to grooms-to-be who want to create a lasting impression on their partners.”

Movies Under the Stars, an industry first when Princess launched it in 2004, offers passengers the opportunity to enjoy drive-in style outdoor movies on the 300-square-foot LED movie screen day and night on the top deck of the ship while relaxing in comfortable chaise lounges, the swimming pool, or the hot tub. After debuting on Crown Princess, the “Engagement Under the Stars” package will be rolled out to all Princess ships that feature Movies Under the Stars, including Caribbean Princess, Grand Princess, and Sea Princess.

More information about the “Engagement Under the Stars” package is available by calling The Wedding Experience at 1-866-444-8820. Additional information about Crown Princess is available through a professional travel agent, by calling 1-800-PRINCESS, or by visiting the company’s website at www.princess.com.
