Open Air Community Screenings

In cooperation with FilmAid International and with funding from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Nairobi, the Hot Sun Foundation is organizing outdoor community screenings of Togetherness Supreme in Africa’s largest slums. The equipment used for these screenings include a 20′ inflatable movie screen and projector donated to FilmAid International by Open Air Cinema. For more information about these screenings please visit the Hot Sun Foundation’s website, or read the summary below.

The Hot Sun Foundation

Social transformation through media and art is the vision of the Hot Sun Foundation. Their mission is to educate, develop talents, and train youth and children from the slums so that they can tell their own stories. We want their stories to travel far to inspire other slum dwellers around the globe. We want to create role models and leaders. We believe that media and art can enable slum dwellers to reshape their lives and bring about social transformation.

Togetherness Supreme

Togetherness Supreme is the story of Kamau, an artist, Otieno, a hustler, and Alice, a preacher’s daughter, whom both Kamau and Otieno fall in love with. All three live in Kibera, east Africa’s largest slum, home to a million people in Nairobi, Kenya. All three are from different tribes but are searching for tribal unity. During the 2007 Kenya presidential elections their community is torn apart by violence and conflicting tribal loyalties. Their story, set against a backdrop of tyranny, is a beacon of hope in an unjust world.

Bresnan Communications Shows Appreciation for Customers with Outdoor Movies

Outdoor MoviesAs the MasterCard commercials suggest, Americans are interested in “priceless” experiences. And a priceless experience is what Bresnan Communications recently provided for it’s customers when it announced an outdoor movie tour as a show of appreciation for its customers.

“We’ve always done customer appreciation in some form,” explains Sean Howard, the Bresnan Communication’s Public Relations Specialist. “The idea was to partner with a television company we often work with, and together we decided to do a community outdoor movie screening. The idea sort of blossomed.”

“People are really grateful we are doing something cool and free, it really cuts on the cost. It means a lot to people to have an event to do with their children,” Howard states.

Bresnan Communications now puts on several of these screenings on an Open Air Cinema screen, mostly focused in the summertime to take advantage of all the available outdoor venues.

“We usually work with a partner and we always show a family friendly movie so people don’t have to worry about bringing their kids,” says Howard. Some of these family-friendly movies include: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Wizard of Oz, and Open Season.
Outdoor movie
“It’s really nostalgic to see kids watching the Wizard of Oz for the first time,” Howard recalls. “And the kids are so mesmerized with the screen, they’re always running up to it trying to figure it out.” In addition to the family friendly movies Bresnan Communications offer free service initiatives such as providing digital fingerprinting services for the children who attend the outdoor movies. Bresnan provides child fingerprinting and id photos at designated Bresnan Safety Net booths, as part of the ongoing Bresnan Safety Net community relations campaign.

Howard is one of the lucky people who gets to drive the equipment to the different events. “I like to joke that I’m touring with the Grateful Dead, with all this sound equipment in my car,” says Howard who enjoys these events. “I get to meet all sorts of people.”

Open Air Cinema in Utica Prepares for Season Opener

The Open Air Cinema in Utica has just kicked off their first outdoor movie series and we would like to wish them the best of luck. The first movie featured will be James Cameron’s record-breaking hit Avatar, and screenings will continue in select parks within Utica throughout the Summer season.

“It’s a concept that is going around the country,” Mayor Roefaro said. “It gives our residents something to do at night time. They come out, they bring long blankets and sleeping bags, or whatever they’re gonna have, and they can sit there and watch a movie outside. It’s really a great concept.”

There will also be food vendors on hand at all Open Air Cinema events, adding to what Mayor David Roefaro said will be a fun evening for families withing Utica.

Outdoor movies will be screened in Utica every Wednesday, except for the first screening which will be held on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Seymour Park in North Utica.

Other screenings scheduled this Summer are:

  • Wednesday, July 28 at Johnson Street Park
  • Wednesday, August 4 at Addison Miller Park
  • Wednesday, August 18 at the Parkway Recreation Center
