About Us

The Open Air Cinema Blog is the most comprehensive database of information about outdoor movie and open air cinema events. Every day, Jessie and Jay scour the internet collecting all the latest news in the outdoor cinema industry. If it is a movie or a film, and it happens outdoors, then you can find out more about it right here!

Jessie Giles

Jessie in AfricaJessie’s favorite things in life are traveling, humanitarian aid, and movies. She has spent two summers working in orphanages in China and Jamaica, and spent 4 months living and working in Uganda. While in Uganda she lived with a local Ugandan family, worked in a rehabilitation center for street children, and toured neighboring nations such as Zambia and Botswana. She is looking forward to living abroad with her husband and family, hopefully in Cuba.

Originally from Los Angeles, Jessie moved to Utah in May 2008 and began working for the humanitarian department of Open Air Cinema. She immediately began work as the director of the Bridal Veil Film Festival, an outdoor film festival benefiting the Rwanda Cinema Center. The festival showed 11 international and award winning films such as “Life is Beautiful” and “City of God”. Since the film fest, she has been busy at work on this blog, as well as various grants and projects for humanitarian film screenings around the world. Though she could not possibly choose one favorite movie, her top 5 are: “Star Wars”, “Amelie”, “Amadeus”, “The Rocketeer”, and “Little Miss Sunshine”.

Jay Johnson

Jay Johnson in Northern UgandaBlaine ‘Jay’ Johnson can’t sit still. He has traveled around the world and back again, and then around again…a few times. His favorite place is Bhutan.

Jay got his start in the outdoor movie industry by working as a audio-visual technician for Open Air Cinema in Los Angeles. He has been screening films outdoor for over two years now. We have tried to keep Jay pent up in a corner of our office, but every few months he manages to escape into the wild. Just before he slips away, he steals an inflatable movie screen out of our warehouse. He hand delivers outdoor cinema equipment to locations around the world and assists in screening outdoor films. He has inflated large movie screens in locations as diverse as the mountains of northern Rwanda, and IDP refugee camps in northern Uganda. Jay is soon moving to SE Asia where he will start an outdoor movie production company.
